ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Bachelor of Science in Missionary Aviation Technology

Building on over 65 years of experience in missionary aviation training, the Bachelor of Science in Missionary Aviation Technology degree program provides graduates with Biblical, Theological and General Studies coursework and the technical training required to prepare them for their vital role in serving the world’s “flying missions.”

Pilot/Mechanics and Maintenance Specialists will train for proficiency using a wide variety of mission-specific equipment, including tailwheel and high performance aircraft.

IC - Number One

Biblical, Theological and General Studies

The first year of the program includes Biblical, Theological, and General Studies courses taken at Moody Bible Institute in Spokane. After completion of the first year, these courses continue throughout the remainder of the program, with modular or semester courses taken simultaneously with technical training.

IC - Number Two

Aviation Maintenance Technology

Following the first year of Biblical, Theological and General Studies courses, each student will begin technical coursework in the Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program. This segment of training provides students with class and lab hours required to take the written, oral and practical exams in the General, Airframe and Powerplant sections of FAA Part 147 training.

Students who successfully pass these exams earn their FAA Airframe and Powerplant Certification and are qualified to work commercially in an aircraft maintenance setting. Students are eligible to enter Advanced Training for Flight or Maintenance only after they have obtained this certification.

IC - Number Three

Choosing an Emphasis

The final portion of the program provides major-specific emphasis, either flight or maintenance specialist. The flight and maintenance specialist faculty are comprised of mission agency members and Moody Aviation personnel.

IC - MAT - Flight

Flight Major IC - Arrow Triangle - Small
The Flight major coursework trains students to qualify for their FAA Private, Instrument and Commercial certifications.  Program distinctions include a 3,000-mile extended cross country project, wilderness survival and first aid instruction, as well as training in a wide variety of aircrafts used currently on the mission field.

IC - MAT - Maintenance

Maintenance Major IC - Arrow Triangle - Small
The Maintenance Specialist major builds on the foundation of Moody’s comprehensive AMT training.  It includes engine overhaul, airframe rebuild, turbine engine maintenance and repair, avionics systems and installation and much more.  Graduates also gain excellent inspection and troubleshooting skills to ensure the mission fleet they manage remains safe and airworthy.

IC - Number Four

Missions Internship

Students take part in a required Ministry Internship any time after the completion of 60 course credits.  The purpose is to allow students to serve short-term in a missions, aviation and cross-cultural context—confirming their fit in this exciting and rewarding field of service.

Hear from experienced faculty and students training to become missionary pilots and mechanics at Moody Aviation in Spokane, Washington.

"When I decided that I wanted to go into mission aviation, I read the book Jungle Pilot, where I was first introduced to an organization called Mission Aviation Fellowship. I contacted their recruiting department and asked where I should get the required training in order to serve with them. They said, 'Hands down, the best place to get mission aviation training is through Moody Bible Institute."
