Application Requirements

To be considered for admission, you must be a born-again Christian, active in the life of a Protestant church, and you must be a high school or GED graduate. If you are presently a high school junior or senior, please follow our non-degree application requirements. In addition, the following items are required as part of the application process:

Doctrinal Qualifications

To be admitted and to graduate, students must personally adhere to and support the Doctrinal Qualifications for Students.

Autobiographical Essay

It is our aim to get to know you as well as possible through this part of the application process. With this in mind, we hope that you will respond to the questions candidly. Please limit your response to 500 words or less for the essay. Feel free to write your essay in any text editor, then copy and paste the text in essay box located inside the application.


You are required to submit the Pastor Reference.

If your church is without a pastor, or if your pastor is a close relative, this form may be given to a former pastor, a minister friend, or a church official. This individual must be someone who has known you for at least one year and has had opportunity to observe your life closely.


Official transcripts are required from your high school and the most recent college or university attended, if you have attended college. Please contact the educational institution to send official transcripts directly to Moody Bible Institute.

International students will be required to have all documents and records evaluated by World Education Services ( or (212) 966-6311) or Education Credential Evaluators ( or (414) 289-3400) or any current member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. A list of members may be found at The evaluation must include a grade point average and a course by course evaluation. Applicants are responsible for paying the evaluation fee.

Home School Students

The Institute recognizes home schooling as a viable educational alternative and welcomes applications from qualified home schooled students. Please submit an official transcript or a GED.

Verification that the homeschool has met the applicant's home state requirements for graduation will be required.

Proof of English Language Proficiency

All international applicants must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language with a high degree of proficiency. Academic success for students at Moody will depend on the level of fluency in English. Therefore, all applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and have the scores submitted directly to the Office of Admissions. Undergraduate applicants must earn a minimum TOEFL score of 550 on paper-based tests, 213 on computer-based tests, or 79 on internet-based tests. Undergraduate applicants must earn a minimum IELTS score of 6.5. Applicants who do not meet a minimum English proficiency requirement will not be admitted.

Exceptions to the required TOEFL or IELTS test scores will be made in the following two instances only: (1) the applicant is a citizen of Australia, the British West Indies, Canada, Great Britain, or New Zealand and is a native speaker of the English language; or (2) the applicant has been admitted to and studied at an accredited educational institution in one of the countries mentioned above or in the United States within the past two years at the time of application.

Applicants should be aware that several attempts may be necessary before the minimum score is achieved. Furthermore, the tests are offered only at certain times during the year. Go to TOEFL at (school code: 1486) or IELTS at Information about taking the examination is provided by the testing service. The results are to be sent directly to Moody Bible Institute. Moody Bible Institute offers no English training programs, and international students are expected to possess sufficient proficiency to engage in full-time study in the English language. An international student application will not be considered until the results of this exam are received.
