When Moody Aviation alum Nathan Fagerlie was finally able to land in Puluk, a small village in Indonesia, people crowded around the plane. Decked out in their traditional clothing and body paint, they hoisted Nathan onto their shoulders and danced in celebration. Next was a traditional bakar batu (a pig roasted in the ground with hot rocks). After several hours of celebration, Nathan said his goodbyes and took off again.
Nathan (’04) and his wife Becky (’03) serve with Mission Aviation Fellowship in Indonesia. Nathan uses the airplane as a tool to help unreached/remote people groups. His recent landing in Puluk was the first step to connect the Wano people to their unreached neighbors. The Wano people have a thriving church and desire to reach their neighbors with the gospel. But the trek between the two villages was mountainous.
The airstrip, which took decades to complete, will allow the Wano to share the gospel with the Puluk people in their own language! One man said, “I didn’t understand why we were building the airstrip. It was just something to do. But now that the airplane has come and the evangelists can come teach to us, I understand.”
Nathan said, “Sometimes it is hard to believe that there are still people who have had no opportunity to hear the gospel. Without someone to invest in their lives, learn their language and culture, and share with them about Jesus, these people will never know Him.”
Becky added, “To see an entire people group hear and understand the gospel for the first time is a truly amazing and humbling experience. There is a long chain of people that make this work possible, and mission aviation is just one part of it.”
Nathan and Becky are deeply thankful for donors who invested in their Moody education. “Moody helped me grow in understanding, faith, and conviction,” Nathan said. “During times of stress and trials I can fall back on the training and education to focus me back on God. Technically, I use the flying skills developed at Moody every time I am in the airplane. I am well equipped to handle the aviation challenges faced here in Papua. Thank you for your generosity. Know your faithful support is being multiplied by those of us on the field that benefited from donations from people we won’t ever meet on this side of heaven.”
